Vertex Form

Vertex form is written in the equation y=a(x-h)2+k

Parts of the Equation

y= the y intercept

a= the vertical or horizontal compression

   -if a is a number less than 1 it becomes a verticalcompression which makes the graph less narrow

   - if a is any number higher than 1 it becomes a horizontal stretch which makes the graph more narrow

  - if the number is positve the parabola opens upwards and if th enumber is negative it opens downwards

h= this number represents the x cordinate for the vertex

  - this number also indicates how much the graph moves to the left or right

  - if its a positive number the graph will move left words whereas if the number is negative it moves towards the right

k= this number represents the y cordinate for the vertex

  - this number indicates how much the graph moves up or down

  - if its a positive number, the graph will move upwards and if the number is negative it moves downwards

When given a vertex and the x and y cordinates in which the parabola passes through and told to write an expression all you need to do is substitute the given information. It was already given that h and k represent the vertex so youd re write the equation with h and k substituted with the missing information. Next, since the x and y cordinates are given youd plug that in as well and the solve!

Vertex Form to Standard Form

1. Expand bracket using FOIL method

2. Collect like terms

Graphing From Vertex Form

To graph from vertex form, the vertex. axis of symmetry and the x intercepts are needed. to figure out the x intercepts, you have to sub in the "x" as 0 and youll get your answer. To find the axis of symmetry take your two x intercepts, add them and divide them by two. When the answer is given, sub it into the original equation and that would give you the vertex.
